Paul Harmon is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner currently working fulltime at The Commonwealth Center for Children & Adolescents providing co-occurring counseling assessments and counseling services. He also serves on the forensic committee and as a Forensic Evaluator to provide evaluations for competency to stand trial. He serves in multiple state work groups to advocate for children’s mental health needs and to reform systems of care for adolescents with co-occurring disorders.

The Center was the recipient of the 2008 Outstanding Service Award by the Office of Child and Family Services by the Virginia Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services for the center’s extraordinary accomplishments in providing integrated treatment of mental health and substance use disorders in adolescents, being a leader and trailblazer in developing service and developing a system of care that meets the needs of the adolescents through their program’s staff’s cutting edge training and research that impacts co-occurring disorders in adolescents.

Paul has over 15 years of experience the field of mental health and substance abuse with adults, adolescents and children and holds national credentials in the mental health field. His educational background includes an Associate’s Degree in Mental Health and Human Services, Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology with an Emphasis in Mental Health and a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology & Counseling. Paul has completed a sequence of post graduate forensic training and examination at The Institute of Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy at The University of Virginia. Paul is listed in the Expert Directory of Mental Health Clinicians with Training in Forensic Evaluation as a Adult and Juvenile Forensic Evaluator in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Paul has presented to graduate students in Virginia and New England and in the community at various civic events. He provides clinically training for graduate students and new employees at the Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents. Paul’s professional career includes work at adult and juvenile state psychiatric hospitals, community mental health clinics, and corrections. He has a broad range of work experience working with federal and state probation as a criminal justice clinician.

Paul also works in private practice part time as the Clinical Director for Harmon Counseling Services in downtown Waynesboro and as a therapist for couples and individuals, both adult and adolescents.
